Music TheoryMarimbaXylophoneHello! My name is Katie and my passion is helping people succeed, whatever that means to them. I have been a percussionist for 11 years, I'm a senior at Drake University studying Music Education and Percussion Performance. I have been teaching for 3 years: private lessons, high school drumline and percussion ensemble, and elementary school bucket drumming. I also perform professionally in the Des Moines area. I’ve won performance awards, but I’m most proud of the success of my students. My teaching philosophy prioritizes self-care and well as technical and musical improvement, and I love to help students manage performance anxiety, auditions, and time management. Please message me and/or book a trial lesson if you’re at all curious about percussion lessons! I tailor lessons to each student based on your personal goals and interests, but I have a standard curriculum if you don’t know where to start. I’m happy to take beginners through advanced high-schoolers.
I have taught private lessons for over 3 years. I specialize in all concert and marching percussion, as well as beginning/intermediate drum set. I also dabble in piano, music theory, and ear training with my percussion students. For a year and a half during the pandemic, I taught lessons entirely online and utilized music software and recordings.
Drumline instructor throughout the Summer and Fall, and concert percussion ensemble director in the winter and spring. I plan and instruct large-group rehearsals, as well as more individualized work with the students. I lead the front ensemble section of the drumline, but also do work with the battery. I regularly program pieces and write exercises for the students. I run and do additional programming with Mainstage for the marching show.
I teach a bucket drumming class of my own design to students K-5 in the Des Moines Public Schools as part of an after school program non-profit.
