Advanced Harmony

This course is suited for those who have taken my Beginning Harmony; or those who understand the principles of voice-leading, treatment of dissonances, and harmonic analysis of Bach Chorales. The Bach

Chorales are the beginning text for this course. The subtleties and extravagances of these little essays in pure beauty can not be overstated. However we will look beyond the 18th Century to see the innovations of many composers who built their work on the strong foundation of Bach’s harmony, but discovered possibilities undreamt of in the 18th Century. Pop songs, including “the great American songbook”, jazz, and country & western songs will included. Ear-training at a more advanced level will be part of our work, including singing short melodies at sight. Please let me know 24 or more hours before a lesson if you need to cancel or reschedule. It is Tissimo policy to impose a penalty if you fail to follow this guideline.
